How to Bind Off a Knitting Project

So you've jumped into your first knitting project and everything's going well...until you get to the end. Unless your style involves leaving the knitting needles in the project, you're going to need to learn binding off.

Binding off is actually quite simple once you know the steps. The idea of binding off is to secure the last row of stitches so your knitting doesn't come unraveled.

Generally if a pattern doesn't specify how to bind off, you'll bind off in knitting. Your pattern may give you different instructions and if so, always go by the pattern.

How to do it

To get started, knit two stitches. Then take either your fingers or left needle and pull the bottom stitch on the right needle up and off the needle. You'll be pulling the bottom stitch over the top stitch, but make sure this top stitch stays on.

Next, knit one stitch and again pull the bottom stitch over the top and off the needle.

Keep doing this until you're left with the final stitch. Cut the yarn, leaving a 5-6" tail. Pull this tail through the stitch and pull it snug. Now you'll weave in the loose ends and you're all done!
